Crystal structure determination

The crystal structure defines the arrangement of atoms periodically repeated in space, because of the symmetry operations of the space group. Determining a crystal structure involves specifying, for a material of unknown structure, the parameters of its lattice, its Bravais lattice, its space group and the position of atoms in the lattice. Crystalline structures are determined from single-crystal samples, powders or thin films.

Several techniques of the PLASSMAT platform can be used to determine crystal structure.

Main techniques

X-ray diffraction

TEM microscopy

Secondary techniques

Ellipsometry

Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance

Infrared & Raman spectroscopies
