First one of the 3 solid-state NMR instruments of the PLASSMAT platform, the 500 MHz spectrometer configuration was chosen to be as versatile as possible. The high 500 MHz (11.7 T) field acquires spectra from quadrupolar nuclei (representing over 70% of observable nuclei), as the line widths of these nuclei decrease with increasing magnetic field strength. Sensitivity also increases with field strength. Which makes it possible to acquire spectra of low-sensitivity nuclei (e.g. low γ nuclei).

The NMR probes were also chosen to ensure the instrument versatility. 5 probes, including 4 MAS*, are available et enable the acquisition of low-frequency core spectra (low γ), but also the modulatation of rotor size (sample holder) and MAS frequency depending on the sample volume and the probed core.

*The MAS (Magic Angle Spinning) technique involves spinning a powdered sample at high speed, up to ~100,000 rpm, at a precise angle (54.736°) to improve spectral resolution.
